Occupy Dallas Encampment Shut Down By City

By: Nina Kay Carroll

At approximately 12:01 am, in near-freezing temperatures and gusting winds, the Dallas, Texas City Police Department reluctantly carried out their orders to sweep and disband the Occupy Dallas encampment. Officers in full riot gear, S.W.A.T. teams, officers on horseback, hundreds of police officers and flood lights marked the scene as an officer on a loud speaker pleaded with protesters to leave the camp peacefully. Protesters were told if they left peacefully, they would be allowed back in after the raid to retrieve their belongings. Protesters stood their ground waving American flags and shouting messages of love and support to the officers who were preparing to arrest them.

“We have a voice. You have a choice” could be heard loudly and clearly from the atoll where I stood videoing the scene. Roughly twenty meters away stood approximately 15 officers on horseback very quietly in the dark. If not for the lone white horse, I would never have noticed them. The megaphone squawked again instructing a reporter from Dallas Morning News named Roy he would be arrested if he remained in the camp. I did not see Roy or anyone else make a move to leave. Protesters would obviously be standing their ground until the bitter end. Cries of “Document” were shouted to me along with warnings to leave if I did not want go get arrested. Once police entered the encampment, I was motioned to move back where I stood next to officers trying to soothe a woman’s fears concerning her belongings. She said, “Y’all told us if we left peacefully, our stuff wouldn’t be torn up but they are clearly tearing up my tent.”

I was unable to see much from my vantage point due to the bright flood lights pointed away  from the camp and toward the bystanders. The effect was to blind people from observing the raid and the arrests. While standing there observing officers walking calmly throughout the camp, removing tents, while receiving no opposition, a protester could be heard joking to officers, “Don’t touch my porn”. The officers I spoke with seemed befuddled as to why the raid was taking place. One officer, who wished to remain unidentified, stated they had only been told shortly before the raid and only had just enough time to mobilize. He was shocked that it was taking place due to the agreement reached by the City of Dallas and the protesters only hours before allowing protesters to stay until 14 December as long as rules were followed. It appears the city breached their agreement with protesters and perhaps never intended to uphold its end of the agreement.

The last thing I was able to see were officers removing tents while protesters stood still and chanted, “This is what democracy looks like”. Reports state between 10-20 protesters have been arrested, no violence was employed from either side, the camp is fully cleared out with officers standing guard throughout the rest of the night. Whether or not the protesters return to the camp remains to be seen. Whether or not the City of Dallas will honor the agreement to allow protesters  to camp until the previously promised date of 14 December is unlikely. The city cited “safety concerns” but the words ring hollow to protesters and supporters of the movement as being a lame excuse for city administrators to attempt to end a movement that now has an approval rating of more than five that of the current U.S. Congress and roughly ten points above the approval rating of President Barack Obama.

The protesters had been camped behind Dallas City Hall to protest what many of the nation see as rampant corporate greed and corrupt government complicity. The main focus of what began as the Occupy Wall Street movement was the bailout of failed U.S. banks which were saved by the tax dollars of mostly the American middle class already suffering financially in a rough economy. The lack of many of the banks to pay taxes after receiving the bailout and awarding their CEOs multi-million dollar bonuses while millions of Americans are unemployed and lost their homes in foreclosure ignited a protest movement that has now gone global. Exacerbating the rage of protesters and supporters of the movement is the realization that the economic crises could have been avoided by these same banks causing Americans to demand the investigation and the prosecution of Wall Street corruption.

The raids to clean the camps after many weeks of increasing frustration on the part of city administration and ever-growing swell of support for Occupy protesters began with the 1am sweep of New York’s Zucotti Park and spread to other cities within 48 hours to the mostly peaceful protest in Dallas. The raids have been accused of being coordinated attacks by mayors and politicians who appear to be confused as how to handle the unique situation. The Occupy protesters are fighting back legally with the help of attorneys who support the movement by challenging arrests, suing for false arrests, unnecessary and excessive force by police and for civil rights violations based on freedom of speech and peaceful assembly. City administrators across the U.S. have argued the encampments were unsanitary and provided havens for criminals. Recent suicides and a Dallas rape of a 14 year old girl were used as points of reference to back their arguments. However, no data has been produced to show the percentage of crime per camp in ratio to the population compared to crime rates among the general non-encampment population.

The recent police raids appear to be the greatest cause of violence in the camps such as the Occupy Oakland (California) raid which resulted in tear gas cannisters being thrown into the crowds and striking an Iraqi war veteran whom had recently returned from two tours of duty. Scott Olsen’s critical head injury enraged many to denounce Oakland mayor, Jean Quan’s decision to use excessive force to disband the camp. The mayor retracted her stance after the public relations nightmare after which many demanded her immediate resignation. Many city administrators are faced with their own PR debacles and appears to increase support of the movement.

Luckily,  the Occupy Dallas raid did not result in violence nor any reported injuries, as of yet. The compliance of the protesters and the lack of violence on the part of protesters and the Dallas Police Department will hopefully encourage the city administrators to open dialogue with the protesters again and uphold the city’s promise to protesters to remain peacefully and safely until a resolution can be reached or the Occupy movement can organize itself into producing a cohesive message with attainable goals. The groundswell of frustrations and anger of the group that is said to represent the 99% of the American population is proving itself to be an unyielding force reminiscent of the Civil Rights Era “sit-ins”, will clearly not be going away anytime soon. Violence on the part of police and persecution by city officials has proven only to serve as a motivator for increased support of the movement, bring in new recruits and embolden the masses to prepare for a full-scale, modern American revolution.

Violence Erupts in Oslo

A bomb exploded in the capitol of Norway today in the government headquarters. So far, 7 fatalities and at least 15 injured have been confirmed. The headquarters house the office of  Prime Minister, Jens Stoltenberg. PM Stoltenberg is also the leader of the Norwegian Labour Party. The building showed windows that had been blown out and shattered glass for many meters radius surrounding the building.

A shooting incident occurred nearby shortly after the bombing at a youth camp but officials are as of yet unaware whether these two incidents are related. A man wearing a uniform that appeared to be a police uniform opened fire of a crowd at the camp.  An eyewitness was about 10 kilometers from down-town Oslo, Anthony  S. Abrahamsen states:

About 10 kilometers from down-town we heard a MASSIVE sound.  The building that was involved in the explosion housed the office for the Prime Minister of Norway…7 reported dead, several casualities, down-town looks like hell, police reported it was a bomb…tv stations are being evacuated..It’s pandemonium. People around Utoya are being urged to jump in their boats to pick up swimming youths(from youth camp) who’ve escaped the desperado(gunman). This kind of thing doesn’t happen over here. I’m at a loss for words.

A source at the Royal Norwegian Embassy in Washington DC states the government buildings would have not been minimally occupied due to it being holiday time in Norway and the late afternoon timing of the explosion. Most workers would have already left the building so fortunately,  the number of potential victims was markedly decreased.

Police are still being evacuated and an arrest has been made in the shooting at the youth summer camp. Noone has yet to claim responsibility for the bombing. Abrahamsen also reports the area is now a No-Phone Zone so cell phone use will be temporarily limited. US media conjectures, with no solid supporting evidence, that this is an isolated incident possibly related to the publication of a cartoon which showed a depiction of the prophet Mohammed which is forbidden under Islamic law. However, Abrahamsen says he fears that war has now come to Norway.

Bitter Emotions and SCAF’s Deceit Fuel Clashes in Egypt’s Tahrir Square

By Nina Kay Carroll

Clashes between Egyptian protesters and SCAF (Supreme Council of  the Armed Forces) erupted again tonight amidst what should have been peaceful demonstrations to honor those dead and wounded during the Egyptian Revolution which ousted Hosni Mobarak.

The protests began early Tuesday with a peaceful sit-in demanding adequate medical treatment for the those injured during the revolution, recognition of the martyrs of the revolution and assistance to the families of the martyrs. Emotions were running high due to SCAF’s impotence in bringing Mobarak to justice. Dr. Mahmoud Sobhyx was in Tahrir Square protesting Tuesday.

“SCAF ignores the injured, telling them to take care of their own medical expense…meanwhile Mobarak is treated in luxury with our money. SCAF keeps him in Sharm el Sheik hospital instead of the jail hospital. The trial moves very slow, nothing is done, giving SCAF time to hide his ass because SCAF needs to hide evidence. SCAF does not want a trial because SCAF’s corruption will be involved.”

Dr. Sobhyx claims the clashes were started Tuesday by thugs hired by the ministry of the interior to give SCAF an excuse for violent intervention against protesters. His claims are bolstered by SCAF’s and Mobarak’s history of the same deplorable tactics during the revolution. A doctor, Ahmed Soliman, attempted to administer first aid to the injured but was arrested by the military police.  Sobhyx was nearby when the clashes began and said:

“Protesters were demanding proper medical care and decent decoration for those who died..they were met with thugs and finally tear gas. We are using Coca-Cola and surgical masks today to protect against the tear gas just like we did in the old days of the revolution.”

SCAF has been in control of government affairs in Egypt for more than 100 days since the revolution and have had, at best, a dubious relationship with the Egyptian polity. During the early days of the revolution, SCAF was feared by the people for reprisals and violence against protesters. This fear was shared globally by many watching the revolution unfold through videos via mainstream media and especially social networking sites such as Facebook and Twitter.

Few will forget the many images of SCAF standing by idly watching Mubarak-hired thugs throwing Molotov cocktails into crowds of unarmed women and children as well as thugs riding on horseback striking peaceful protesters randomly with whips. SCAF has now sullied its image with the admission that they performed “Virginity Tests” on women. Human Rights Groups and Women’s Rights Groups have decried this abhorrent and archaic practice quite loudly and vehemently.

SCAF is also being accused of hijacking the revolution for its own underlying purposes of government control. Many protesters originally believed that SCAF would help Egypt through the interim period until elections can be held in October or November 2011 but now distrust SCAF and openly call them liars in the streets and on social networks. Time will tell whether SCAF will uphold its promise to the Egyptian people or hamper democracy for people who have waited too long and sacrificed far too much to lose sight of their vision of freedom now.

Gender Discriminatory Ads Perpetuate Archaic Stereotypes

By Nina Kay Carroll

Recently, I was watching the news as usual. What was unusual about this day was that I was very tired and therefore too lazy to channel-surf when commercials came on. Yawning and drooling, I watched an ad for www.CreditReport.com with a hardworking beefy man named “Stan” who told me about his past employment issues and how our drain-circling economy had damaged his credit score. So now poor Stan is working two jobs to make ends meet but his creditors have labeled him as “lazy”. So creditreport.com has somehow helped out the beleaguered and diligent Stan. I know that doesn’t really register even the tiniest of “woohoos” on the Yeeha Scale but the next commercial that came directly afterwards definitely woke me up.

The second commercial was also from creditreport.com but this time, the person with abysmal credit is a very, very pregnant woman named Lisa. Lisa is standing on a well-manicured lawn in front of an upscale middle-class two-story home while a small child runs around playing rather free-spiritedly. Lisa tells me how her credit score is not what it should be for her and her husband to purchase a bigger house for the new “bun in the oven” which is apparently TWO buns in the oven. Lisa does not mention anything about working even one job, much less two in this ad that fails in its feeble attempt to invoke any pity on my behalf for knocked-up, stay-at-home mom, Lisa.

So, now I have a few questions swirling around in my brain that wishes it was watching cartoons instead. The first question being, “Who in the heck has used the phrase ‘bun in the oven’ since 1956?” Seriously. The second question is, “How many blatantly sexist ads are there like this circulating on our televisions sending subliminal messages to us while we think we are not listening to these lame commercials at all?”

Once the implications of these commercials has started to really sink in, I just get mad. Why is Stan the MAN portrayed as being hard-working and reliable while Lisa, the WOMAN, is portrayed as unemployed, barefoot and pregnant AGAIN? And just as a side note for Lisa, if your credit is rubbish, you don’t have a job and you live in a house that is too small for more children, maybe you should do the responsible thing and mosey on down to Planned Parenthood and pick yourself up some OrthoTriCyclen. Then you can wait until you have a job, bigger house and better credit score before you go having twins.

Am I being over-sensitive to these ads because I am a woman? The answer to that is an emphatic NO. I took liguistic anthropology at the University of Southern Mississippi and Dr. Alexandra Jaffe taught me about the ever so subtle nuances of marketing linguistics. I may not have learned more than two things in that entire semester, mostly because I slept through it, but I did learn to pay attention to the underlying message of an ad and its often quite sneaky presentation.

I emailed the creditreport.com folks and, not surprisingly, got zero response. So either their customer service sucks or I hit a nerve. So I decided to start paying more attention to the commercials I usually gloss over to see if there existed similar commercials that portrayed women in an archaic, back to Mayberry light. I discovered the commercial for the 5 Hour Energy drink. A woman is shown walking into her house holding grocery bags in each hand complaining how tired she is because she left the office (at least she works), then bought groceries, must come home to make dinner, clean house, get kids bathed and ready for bed. The little brats are running around the house like their butts are on fire and her ever so helpful husband suggests she drink 5 Hour Energy to give her a nice boost to get all her work done. By the way, he suggests this as he is sitting on the couch NOT helping her carry groceries, fully ignoring the rambunctious kids and has his feet propped up on the coffee table that he is not dusting or polishing to help out his wife with her “chores”.

At least I am not the Lone Ranger in my feelings of offense toward my entire gender.

http://thestir.cafemom.com/big_kid/112177/moms_who_do_everything_are

Catherine Crawford of The Stir, points out the damage these types of ads do to the feminist movement. And before you cringe and turn away from some potential bra-burning, she, and I, mean feminism in terms of negative portrayal of women in outdated stereotypes such as being the sole caretaker of the children and household needs even though both spouses/companions are both employed. Parenting and household duties as the responsibility of the female, is insulting and degrading and should have died out when June Cleaver went off the air.

If complaining to these misogynistic companies is falling on deaf ears, what is our recourse to have these removed so they do not send the wrong message to our young daughters as to what their “duties” are as a wife and mother? The only recourse available is to complain to the networks that take these companies money and then pollute the airwaves with offensive discriminatory advertisements. I’m looking at you CNN. Drop those ads NOW before I drop you.

Rebels on the Offensive in Libya’s Nafusa Mountains

By Nina Kay Carroll

Fighting continues in the Nafusa Mountain town of Yefren which has been under continuous bombardment by Muammar Gaddafi’s troops since 2 April. The Libyan freedom fighters went on the offensive in the last 72 hours capturing several of Gaddafi soldiers and military equipment that has been used in attacks on the besieged area.  The rebels took the offensive in an attempt to free the Sook district, capturing 13 of Gaddafi’s soldiers who had occupied the local hospital. The soldiers had been using the hospital as a command and control center forcing the sick, wounded and dying into the streets and without medical care. Gaddafi’s troops also cut off all ground routes for the people to evacuate or receive humanitarian aid. The remainder of the troops not captured by revolutionary forces were seen speeding away in two vehicles toward Beer-Ayad within the last hour.

Gaddafi forces are reported to have set fire to the home of a translator, Mohammed Aribi Alshibani, after a press conference in Italy in which he publicly announced his support of the Libyan revolution. A source in Yefren reports Gaddafi has been shelling the city with GRAD rocket launchers and targeting civilian and residential areas. Many homes have been completely destroyed and there has been little reprieve in the shelling attacks since they began on 3 April.

Two freedom fighters, Issa Mansoor Algeeg and Khaled Mohamed Alsineen, are confirmed dead from clashes near Zentan and at least four revolutionaries are reported injured. However,  Gaddafi forces have begun to retreat from the Zentan area towards Zawyat Albaglool within the last 24-36 hours and the rebel forces were able to take two vehicles and three tanks from Gaddafi’s troops during clashes in Ar-Riyaniya on Wednesday.

Events of the last few days have breathed renewed vigor into the revolutionary forces. Sources report Coalition planes could be heard bombing storage buildings south of  Zentan within the last 36 hours and electricity and mobile phone networks have finally been restored into the besieged areas as well as much needed humanitarian aid finally arriving.

Morale had taken somewhat of a blow after reports leaked from Eastern Libya of rebel forces mistreating prisoners of war, unlawful arrests and the killing of sub-Saharan Africans wrongly accused of being Gaddafi mercenaries. According to The Associated Press, rebel forces have since distributed guidelines for the treatment of prisoners of war so as to be in accordance with the Geneva Conventions governing the humanitarian treatment of prisoners and other victims of war. Since the distribution of the guidelines, at least one of Gaddafi’s soldiers who was wounded in the fighting in Yefren has received medical treatments by rebel forces.

Humanitarian Aid a Salvation for Besieged Libyan Mountain Towns But Gaddafi’s Attacks on Civilians Continue Unabated

By Nina Kay Carroll

AidArrives Video Courtesy of Abdo Al Herrari of Libya Hurra.

After more than two long months of siege by Muammar Gaddafi’s troops, the Nafusa Mountain town of Zentan has finally received desperately needed humanitarian aid amidst incessant attacks from Gaddafi troops. Multiple urgent appeals had been sent to the U.N. and ICRC(International Committee of the Red Cross) for food, medicines, water and air evacuation of the wounded throughout the siege that has decimated the towns of Yefren, Algalaa, Kekla and Zentan.

The situation for the wounded and sick became intensely critical when Gaddafi began using the local hospital for his command and control center and cut off the supply routes for humanitarian aid. With these routes cut off by Gaddafi troops, the wounded could not be transported out of Libya for medical care by ground because of troop-controlled checkpoints.  Electricity, water and petrol supplies were also cut off to civilians.

Abdo Al Herrari, a humanitarian worker who has been struggling tirelessly to get messages to the international community, journalists, humanitarian aid groups and NATO, said the workers had been capturing rain water for weeks to survive but those supplies were running dangerously thin. He now reports Gaddafi is pouring petrol into the water sources to kill off animals and contaminate any drinking water the people might use to survive the siege long enough for NATO and rebel fighters to liberate their towns. He says no doctors are left to care for the wounded. Only a few nurses remain to care for a population of between 7,000-10,000 civilians. Roads are inaccessible due to Gaddafi troops arresting and killing those who attempt to leave for supplies and assistance.

The Gaddafi regime has already been issued arrest warrants by The Hague in The Netherlands and will face charges of crimes against humanity. Herrari believes Muammar Gaddafi and his sons should also be tried for genocide for targeting an indigenous mountain tribe known as the Amazigh. Gaddafi’s hatred of the Amazigh tribe is well-known and his targeting of this specific population, inhumane strategy of starving them out of the mountains and prohibiting their access to medical care amounts to “ethnic cleansing”. Herrari’s reports clearly show that even while Muammar Gaddafi negotiates for a ceasefire, he is still murdering and committing the most heinous of crimes against civilians who are protected by the U.N. and ICRC protocols for protection of civilians and the wounded during a time of war.

Below is one Herrari’ s reports concerning Gaddafi troop movements, NATO airstrikes, Gaddafi’s reprehensible siege tactics, burning of farms and the destruction of cities. Some videos may be considered graphic in nature.

As of this publication, I have received no word whether the sick and wounded have been able to receive medical attention via the supply route by which the humanitarian aid arrived. When I spoke with Abdo Al Herrari on Friday, he stated they needed helicopters to remove those needing medical attention to hospitals outside of Libya or to eastern Libyan cities where hospitals are functional in towns held by the freedom fighters and Interim National Transitional Council. Without humanitarian and medical assistance, the 7,000-10,000 civilians must wait and hope for a ceasefire soon. Unfortunately, Gaddafi’s pleading words for ceasefire and peace are drowned out by his actions of cruelty and murder.

Dirk Nowitzki and Dallas Mavericks Going To NBA Finals

By Nina Kay Carroll

Wednesday 25 May 2011

The Dallas Mavericks emerged victorious over the Oklahoma City Thunder to win the 2011 NBA Western Conference Title. In what has proved to be a nail-biter of a series, the Mavericks and the Thunder fought it out to the very end, struggling for every point, every shot, every block and every play right until the buzzer sounded.

The young Oklahoma team played extremely well the entire season and phenomenally so against the Memphis Grizzlies in Round 2 but Dallas’s Dirk Nowitzki rallied his team to get a second shot at the NBA Finals. With a final score of 100-96, the Dallas Mavericks will now go on to play the winner of the Eastern Conference title which is currently being contested between the Chicago Bulls and the Miami Heat with the Heat in the lead 3-1 in the series.

Miami and Chicago play again Thursday night and if Miami wins that game, they will go on to play the Mavericks on Tuesday 31 May. It will be a bittersweet reunion for the Dallas Mavericks who lost to the Miami Heat in the 2006 NBA Finals. Mavericks owner Mark Cuban lost his temper at referees during that intensely nasty series and was fined heavily by the NBA. So perhaps this will be a chance at redemption for Cuban and his veteran-filled roster of Nowitzki, Jason Kidd, Jason Terry, Peja Stojakovic, Tyson Chandler and Shawn Marion.

While Miami will be bringing their famed star players, the Mavericks will be bringing a secret weapon: J.J. Barea. Barea has been with the Mavericks for four years but has definitely made a reputation for himself on the team. By NBA standards Barea is no Goliath. At 6’0″(1.83 m) and 175 lbs (79.4 kg),  the 26 year old point guard is frequently called “the little guy” by the fans but his impact on the team is anything but small. In the 4 years since the native of Puerto Rico went pro, he has shown remarkable ability to play many different roles on his team. His size and speed help him drive past multiple defenders straight into the paint, make passes reminiscent of former Maverick, Steve Nash, rebound over much taller defenders off the glass and his season average of 9.5 points per game usually seem to come when his team is in need of a rallying push.

So now Miami and the Bulls have to duke it out at least one more game, the Dallas Mavericks have at least 6 days to rest, regroup and possibly return to Miami for a second shot at the coveted NBA title.

Human Rights’ Activist, Abdulhadi alKhawaja on Trial Again: Will Bahrain’s Human Rights Violations Be Ignored Again?

By Nina Kay Carroll

Wednesday 25 May 2011

Abdulhadi alKhawaja Human Rights Activist on Trial in Bahrain Subject to Torture, Beatings

Leading Bahraini human rights activists including Abdulhadi alKhawaja has been detained in a Bahrain prison since 8 April. He was arrested without a warrant by masked gunmen who broke into his house during the middle of the night beating him unconscious in front of his family. For weeks after his arrest, his family did not know where he was being held and the alKhalifa regime refused any access to him by his family, his attorneys or human rights watch groups.  At his first trial, only one of his lawyers was allowed in the courtroom and was not allowed to speak for the entirety of the proceedings. AlKhawaja has also been beaten and tortured during his detention by the al-Khalifa regime whose human rights violations have been nothing short of appalling, disgraceful and criminal. AlKhawaja was also hospitalized during this time for head wounds sustained during beatings by the Bahrain regime. An eyewitness at the hospital said alKhawaja was beaten so severely he was almost unrecognizable.

What is most disgraceful is the blind eye the Western countries have turned toward al-Khalifa’s crimes. U.S. President Barack Obama in his speech regarding America’s new Middle East policy since the beginning of the Arab Spring, only briefly mentioned Bahrain and made no mention of illegal military trials being carried out in several of the Middle East nations. This lack of mention could be due to the U.S.’s staunch ally, Saudi Arabia, aiding the Bahrain government in its suppression of the protests and collusion in its violence against human rights activists in Bahrain. President Obama may have also been reticent to condemn military trials since the U.S. is preparing to bring to trial Khalid Sheikh Mohammed,  one of the masterminds behind the 9/11 attacks through a military trial at Guantanamo Bay Naval Base which has received widespread condemnation for its use of torture and extraordinary rendition.

The U.S. may also be hesitant to call attention to the torture and mistreatment in Bahrain’s prisons due to the recent accusations of torture and mistreatment of American serviceman, PFC Bradley Manning, at the hands of military personnel in Quantico, Virginia. Manning is the the alleged Wikileaks whistle-blower who exposed the Collateral Murder video showing U.S. military gunning down civilians and 2 Reuters’ journalists in a helicopter attach in Iraq. The U.S. military originally lied about the circumstances surrounding the deaths of the journalists.  The public outcry and criticism by journalists finally pressured the military to move Manning to Ft Leavenworth Military Prison where his attorney states his treatment has improved drastically. Manning’s lawyers are filing charges against the Quantico military personnel in charge of Manning’s detention and treatment for violating his civil rights. Perhaps the U.S.’s own recent embarrassments in the human rights department has silenced its outrage and admonishment of Bahrain’s heinous atrocities.

Whatever the reason for the deafening silence coming from the West, human rights activists, journalists and concerned citizens from all over the world, have placed pressure on the Kingdom of Bahrain to release alKhawaja after his daughter, Zainab alKhawaja brought international attention to her father’s plight when she went on a hunger strike. After intense media pressure, he was finally allowed to call his family to bring him some clothes. However, his family was still not allowed to see him. Shortly afterwards he was placed on trial but only with an audacious violation of his rights. Neither he nor his attorney were allowed to speak against the charges brought against him. He has recently made allegations that his captors have threatened to rape him unless he confesses to the trumped up charges and have also tried to break him psychologically by saying they had raped his female family members. By international law, these allegations must be investigated but the Bahrain regime has impudently refused to look into the charges or allow the humanitarian group, Front Line Defenders,  access to him to assess his physical and mental well-being and to question anyone concerning the abuse charges.

I personally called the Embassy of the Kingdom of Bahrain again today to inquire as to alKhawaja’s health and upcoming trial. Just as every other time I have contacted the embassy, they were completely clueless as to the allegations even though I emailed them articles from www.world247.net  and CNN which fully discussed the allegations made against the Bahrain regime. The lady I spoke with did assure me that alKhawaja’s attorneys, his family and human rights organizations would be allowed access to his trial tomorrow. I will be quite surprised if they actually keep that promise.  Just as every other time I have called the embassy,  they offered to have a diplomat call me back in the morning. I am under no disillusion that I will receive a call from anyone from the Bahrain Embassy. But rest assured, if alKhawaja’s trial is a farce yet again, the international community and journalists will be calling the Bahrain Embassy again.

An Urgent Appeal for Help to NATO and the ICRC from Libyan Civilians in Need of Humanitarian Aid

By Nina Kay Carroll

Early this morning I received an urgent plea for help from someone whom I believe to be working either in or has access to a hospital near Yefren, Libya. He is asking for assistance in aprising NATO of the location of Gaddafi forces that have besieged the towns of Yefren and Algalaa in the Nafusa Mountain region. Water supplies have been cut off, food supplies are almost completely depleted with children suffering the worst. Gaddafi’s forces have attacked or cut off the routes by which humanitarian aid can reach these areas. This is in direct violation of the U.N. and ICRC rules of not causing harm to civilians during armed conflict. With arrest warrants already issued for Gaddafi and his commanders/generals, this report will serve to bolster the charges against them and hopefully demand full accountability with no leniency for their crimes.

At the time of this publication, I have been unable to confirm the information from my source through either the ICRC, NATO, U.S. Department of Defense or mainstream media contacts. The information is of such an urgent nature that I have decided to publish without independent confirmation in hopes the necessary authorities will see this and properly address the situation. I am publishing the information I received in its entirety and unedited.

TO WHOM IT MAY CONCERN,

A MESSAGE ON BEHALF OF THE PEOPLE OF YEFREN AND ALGALAA- NAFUSA MOUNTAINS, LIBYA

(Saturday, May 21st 2011)

Across Libya we thank the Libyan community, International Institutions and Governments and all those who believe in Humanity. We welcome the International Organisations support in taking the bold decision to protect the civilians of Libya by “taking all necessary measures” and we thank the millions of people and civil contributors who believe in their duty to defend the fundamental rights of humans beings: subsistence, protection, affection, understanding, participation, identity and freedom.

This appeal is prepared in response to the continuoius plea’s by civilians on the ground in Yefren and Algalaa who have been suffering every day for six weeks. The question on the minds of these civilians is if they would survive each day and if and when the eyes in the sky will assist to protect and prevent a human catastrophe.

This appeal is on behalf of the Libyan People in Yefren and Algalaa, to the International Humanitarian Agencies, UN, ICRC, NATO, NTC and a proposal of collaboration and partnership with local humanitarian workers to implement an aid corridor to Yefren and Algalaa. This aid corridor will ensure that ca. 7000 to 10,000 civilian women and children and men will be protected and innocent lives saved. I trust we can respond to this humane request before it is too late.

We have prepared below key humanitarian stress indicators that has triggered this appeal as well as including the main locations of Pro G forces that is attacking civilians in Yefren and Algalaa as well as preventing humanitarian aid in reaching them.

For any questions, if you require further information or require the assistance of sources on the ground and local humanitarian personnel please do not hesitate to contact me.

I thank you in advance in taking this information seriously and we thank the civilians who have risked their lives in collecting this information for you.

Are You ready For The Rapture…Again?

By Nina Kay Carroll

Are you ready for the 2011 Rapture? The rapture, according to the Christian Bible, is the day that begins the end of days, Armageddon, the Apocalypse, or the beginning of end of the world. On the day of rapture, according to scriptures, god will call all his children home to heaven by ascending into the air, leaving behind the heathen, sinners and unsaved on Earth to suffer through the destruction of our world as we know it. But the end will not be immediate. The rapture is only the first day of the beginnings of great tribulations for those left behind. Looking at recent events in the world, one could argue the time of great tribulations and suffering has already begun. How else do you explain the incessant news coverage of Donald Trump and the “birther” issue?

Rapture lore says people will disappear immediately when it occurs. Such as while driving cars, flying airplanes and a whole array of important things we might be doing. So why aren’t people panicking? Why are people not running to church en masse praying for forgiveness and salvation to try to squeeze into the gates of Heaven at the  last minute? Is it because religion has been on the decline in the majority of countries for years or because this is not the first time a rapture date has been announced…and missed. In fact the rapture has been predicted twice by the same man, prominent Christian radio host, Harold Camping of Family Radio, predicted the rapture in 1994. He explains the the lack of ascension into Heaven as miscalculations on his part. But he says that he has the date correct this time from studying a series of texts: Saturday 21 May 2011.

The rapture no longer instills great fear in people as it once would have years or decades ago.  Not surprisingly, mainstream media has had a field day with it. It was jokingly entertained by Eliot Spitzer of CNN’s In The Arena and even openly mocked by Anderson Cooper. Jon Stewart of Comedy Central’s The Daily Show, claimed the Rapture is the GOP’s last chance of stalling Health Reform. In fact, it has been the subject of many a joke and party planning on Twitter. Some of the tweets for rapture plans include:

Great! I get a date Saturday night and the world ends!
Either people are no longer very religious, no longer god-fearing, not superstitious or are just tired of having their chain yanked by crazy religious zealots who “cry wolf” every decade or so. The Y2K scare got more reaction than this rapture. So I am late on my student loan payments, have not been gainfully employed for months or cleaned my house in preparation for this rapture thing. Come Monday morning, I will call the U.S. Treasury Department and my Congressmen to see if they have a Rapture Bailout program.
