Chilean Students Get Creative In Protest

Groups use theatrics and art to demand education reform

Two months into marches calling for education reform, students from across Santiago have taken on a carnival-esque approach to express their demands.

“There is a new form of protest we’re seeing today,” Jaime Gajardo, president of Chile’s teachers union, the Colegio de Profesores de Chile, said on Thursday. The president’s statements were at times barely audible over a live band that was playing at the Plaza de los Heroes rallying point. “It’s a demonstration of many expressions. And it runs contrary to our opponents’ portrayals of us as a violent activist movement.”
